Road Running Ramblings Mar 2016

by Road Running Manager - 08:51 on 27 March 2016

Happy Easter everyone and welcome to this month’s Road Running Manager’s blog. Issues covered include the final standings of the 2015/16 Winter League, the onset of the 2016 Summer Road Running season, membership and AGM news as well as the regular features of Training Tip and Motivation Corner!

Winter League 2015/16

The full details of the Winter League results and race times can be found on the 2015/16 page.  Congratulations to both Rory Longmore and Janet Priestley on winning their respective competitions.  I would also like to give my thanks to all who have helped over the season in marshalling, collecting times, placing signs, sharing information on cancelled or rearranged races and the all-important post-race refreshments.  Thanks also to Alan and Linda Cameron who have volunteered to arrange the Winter League presentation evening on the 30th of April, more details will be appearing on all ADAC communication forums in the coming weeks but if you can please keep the date free.

Summer Championship 2016

I’m writing this the morning after the clocks have changed to BST, and although it is currently blowing a hoolie and pouring with rain it is now ‘summer’ time!  As such the Summer Road Championship is about to start and the first chance members have to claim points in the Carlisle Parkrun on 2nd April.  Full details of the summer fixtures are available on the relevant page of this website.

2016/17 ADAC Membership

It’s that time of year again when memberships are due – full details (you’ve guessed it) are on the relevant page of this website!  Please can I ask all members to get their renewals in as soon as possible.  In order to qualify for points from the summer races (Roads and Hills) you need to be a paid up member and it is far easier to manage the scores knowing who is a member and not having to chase fees throughout the season.  It would therefore be greatly appreciated if all memberships could be paid by the end of April.

2016 AGM

This year’s Annual General Meeting will be held on Monday 11th April at 7pm in the meeting room at Annan Swimming Pool.

All members are eligible to attend and the committee is genuinely keen for as many as can physically fit into the room to attend!  We need your support, ideas and enthusiasm to continue to develop our club. This is your chance to make your thoughts and opinions heard, a good attendance would be appreciated.

Training Tip

If you’ve ever watched a big race such as the London marathon on TV you will have seen different shots of the elite runners at the front and the ‘fun’ runners later on at the back half of the field.  Compare their running styles and you’ll notice that aside from fitness and strength the major difference is how efficient the elite runners are in transferring effort into forward motion. This is because they are pushing off with their standing foot rather than bouncing like most of the runners at the back of the field.

Many social runners rely on the momentum of the following leg to give them forward motion and almost bounce on their standing leg. This uses up a load of energy and leads into a vicious cycle of becoming more and more tired and less and less efficient.

So this month’s tip is to try and focus on pushing off with your standing leg, lean forward slightly in your stance and transfer the vertical bounce into forward momentum. A small change like this may lead to a significant change in your PBs over the summer!

Motivation Corner

This month’s words of wisdom are from an unknown source but I really like it:

“Just Run – it’s very hard to understand in the beginning that the whole idea is not to beat the other runners. Eventually you learn that the competition is against the little voice inside you that wants to quit.”

That’s all for this month – bring on the good weather and let the summer begin!

Brilliant read. I'm sitting here stuffed full after hosting Easter Sunday Lunch - don't even ask what we've eaten!

Looking forward to some great summer runs and maybe beating a few hills.

Keep 30th April free for the Winter League Presentation Night folks - always a good night.

Cheers Andy
