Road Running Ramblings - June 2016
by Road Running Manager - 19:50 on 29 June 2016
It’s time for the June Road Running Blog.
Summer Road Championship
We are now halfway through the summer fixture list following Tuesday night’s run at Lockerbie, the updated scores are available in the usual spots. So far 33 individuals have taken part in one or more races although interestingly (at least to me anyway), no-one has completed all 7 runs. Perhaps this is in part due to the back-to-back half marathons although a few people did both – if you have any views on this please let me know in the comments below.
In a few races time runners will begin to ‘drop’ some events from their totals as they build up their best runs – it is important that you keep an eye on your scores to make sure that there are no mistakes!!
40th Anniversary Event
A reminder to all of the planned 40th anniversary fun day on September 10th at the track in Annan. All paid up members should have received an invitation but apologies if these haven’t arrived. The club is keen that as many members as possible attend and we make it a memorable day. Please can you let one of the club committee members know (one way or another) if you will be coming as soon as possible.
Also if anyone has any suggestions for games or other activities that would suit the occasion or can offer other assistance, again speak to a committee member.
Summer Festival of Running
I shall shortly be issuing a flyer for the summer running festival which is scheduled for the weekend of 5/6/7 August.
The plan is to do the same as last year – if anyone is able to offer their assistance over the three days (timekeeping, signing, photography, marshalling, catering etc) it would be greatly appreciated.
Carlisle Parkrun
As you will know we are running the Parkrun as a Championship event over 8 specific Saturdays this year, with the 4th scheduled for the 2nd July. Following on from the principle of last year, if the organisers decide to use the ‘Winter’ course due to weather conditions on one of the weekends then that will be accepted as a valid run and the results used accordingly.
At time of writing the standings so far are:
- Rory Longmore 18.53
- Andy Render 19.17
- Joe Boardman 20.17
- John Green 21.54
- Ernie Bryden 22.57
- John Murphy 23.06
- Janet Priestley 24.09
- Charlie Graham 24.51
- Douglas Anderson 28.33
Training Tip
We all know that darts players strive for 180 but did you also know that runners should be too?! 180 is the magic number when it comes to ‘cadence’, or the number of strides you take each minute. If you take less than 180 you are probably over striding (or not moving your legs as quickly as you can/should). Running at a high cadence means that your feet land closer to your centre of gravity which is easier on the body and less inclined to act as a brake if you are over-striding.
To check your cadence count the number of times your right foot hits the ground over 30 seconds and multiply by 4 (to include your left leg!!). It’s not a hard and fast rule to hit 180 but the science has shown that shorter strides reduces the impact against the terrain your running on which will reduce the amount of energy expended to absorb the pressures which you can then use to drive you forward!
Motivation Corner
Don’t compare your results to ‘someone else’. You can never be another person, you can only be a better version of yourself.
Cheers guys, let me know your thoughts below.
Andy
