Road Running Ramblings - September 2016

I'm sitting writing this month's blog looking out at a drab and dreich end of September day and it is time to accept that the British summer is over and we are into autumn again.  A lot of runners use this time to look back on their main racing season to see how things went and learn some lessons and consider what they might do differently the next year.  For my own season overall I'm reasonably satisfied, although the last few months have been a bit stop/start and hindered by injuries the first half of the season was successful and I managed to pick up a couple of prizes along the way so I'm trying my best to look at a half full glass.  I'd love to hear your own thoughts on the summer season (which is not quite finished yet!) both on a personal and club basis.

This Saturday sees the final Carlisle Parkrun event as part of the Summer championships and is also the big day for Joe and Danny and their charity fund raising challenge.  Hopefully there will be a strong turnout from ADAC and the day is a success - if you are running look out for the marshals and give them a cheer!

 

End of Summer Awards

This has been arranged for November 12th at the Cressfield Hotel in Ecclefechan, more details to follow.  The event will cover both the Roads Summer season and the Hill Running Championship which by all accounts looks to be heading to some close finishes in some categories.

There will also be the Most Improved Runner award which no doubt will give me a few sleepless nights over the next few weeks as I try to make a decision across the last 12 months.  [Please address brown paper envelopes containing non-sequential used bank notes to PO Box 1972 FAO Sim Ellerdyce including any suggestions for consideration.]

 

Training Tip

A lot of the time after races I hear people say that they couldn't get their breathing right.  Having recently been reading a few running books and training aids there may be at least two factors at play here

  1. Posture - runners who have a tight posture when running (leaning over, stiff shoulders and chest) will be limiting their capacity to fill their lungs.  They will be taking shallow breaths and exhaling much quicker than their lungs can absorb the oxygen.  Accordingly they breathe quicker than they need to and end up feeling out of breath.
  2. Warm up - a good warm up will get you ready for a race or even a training session. However a good warm up does not generally consist of a 5 minute chat in a car park, taking off a tracksuit top, checking the course and going!!  You need to get you body ready for the run and this includes your lungs and breathing.  A few high pace strides and run throughs get your legs warm and also make you slightly breathless.  Whilst you should never overdo it in the warm up or run sprints prior to a marathon you do need to get the body ready so that when you start the session you can get your second breath.

Of course there may be other issues including having a cold or setting off too fast but if you can control the two suggestions above you are well on the way to improving overall.

That's my line for the season "Just don't give up" esp. after the winter of injury. Seems to be working now though. Will let you know of my season in more detail via email. Thanks again Andy for some wise words.Cannot wait for Saturday now - everyone is welcome to come along. Cheers
