Road Running Ramblings - Jan16
by Road Running Manager - 21:48 on 27 January 2016
Hi Folks, Andy here with the first of what I'm planning to be a monthly update on all things Road Running as well as offering some suggestions, tips and general motivation to the ADAC Road Crew!
As I write we are on the cusp of the 2016 Winter Festival. I think this could be a fun but challenging weekend of running and one of the events I've been looking forward to for a wee while. There is more information on the Seniors page for anyone who has been out of the country for a wee while!
We are also now more or less back on track with the Winter League after disruption from the weather and some health and safety concerns. The points system is a bit different to previous years and as far as I can see there is still all to play for in both the men's and women's competitions. As always anyone who feels there may have been a mistake in the results can let me know - often the errors can be down to Doctor's handwriting!!!
Members might be interested to hear of a new event being staged by Dumfries Harriers in March - the Glenkiln 12 mile Road Race is being held on 13th March (Glenkiln is a reservoir to the west of Dumfries and more details can be found on the Dumfries Harriers website http://www.dumfriesharriers.co.uk/mabie-trail-race)
January's Training Tip
Give every run a purpose! Sometimes all we have time for is a 30 minute run or we just need to get out and clear our heads for a few miles without any thinking or streses and that is great as a means of getting fresh air and exercise. However as the adage goes - if you keep on putting the same thing in, you'll keep on getting the same thing out.
To improve try to build a weekly plan of different runs giving your body a range of challenges and you are more likely to see benefits and improvements. For example try doing a shorter more intense run on one day - perhaps 3 miles each mile getting progressively quicker followed by a warm down - a hill session at 80% max effort or a long steady run where your breathing allows you to comfortably maintain a conversation (even if its with yourself!).
Each different session will build either your stamina, speed endurance or leg strength in much the same way that gym monkeys alternate between upper body and leg days. Give it a try - you might enjoy it!!
Motivation corner
This month's motivation quote is an unreferenced one I picked up recently which might help as you are climbing Langholm Monument hill as part of the Winter Festival!
"Strive for progress, not perfection!"
Summer Championship
Hopefully summer will be with us soon (!) and as such it will soon be time to prepare the fixture list.
The usual races will be in the mix but if there is anything out there (within the local area) that people want to suggest for consideration then let me know. I'm also interested to hear views on whether a half marathon should be a mandatory element of the Champs, whether the Parkrun experiment last year was a good or bad thing and how many races there should be included. You should be able to comment below (I think!!) or you can let me know by email, text or by letter if you insist.
That's all for now - I plan to be back in late Feb!!
