"I CAN "

“I CAN” - The will to win.

What makes a winner? It’s an easy question to answer.  In my opinion a winner is someone who gets out of bed whilst everyone is asleep and puts that first step on the road , track or trail. You can be any age, any ability but the most important thing is that you did it ! You achieved something you didn’t or couldn’t yesterday or last month, or last year.

I was at Strathclyde Park yesterday and was overwhelmed with the atmosphere and support that was there for all runners of all abilities. Everyone was a winner just by being there. People cheered every step of the way round. When we overtook people they cheered us on and we did the same back. It was more a celebration of “WE CAN” than anything else.

The doubts will always be there in your mind. You get to the line. The questions are in your head. Did I train hard enough for this ? Did I rest enough ? What about that runner there ? Is he going to beat me ? And the big one................”What if I get half way and start to fade?” We’re all a bit scared just before the start. That’s natural. When that fear isn’t there then that’s the time to worry. Maybe you’re not “up for this”. Maybe you don’t really want it badly enough. The same answer needs to be said inside your head for every doubting moment and you need to repeat it over and over again “I CAN”.

When you can see the finish line almost a mile away (as we did yesterday) then it is exactly the phrase that needs to be repeated. The doubts will be there.  The same doubts that keep coming back. Ignore them. Just listen to the one voice inside your head that says “I CAN”.  If you want it bad enough you will get it.

So get up...............and say to yourself  “I CAN”
